Occupational therapy helps children and youth who may be experiencing difficulties in their daily environment.

Occupational therapy may involve:

  • activities/exercises to develop skills
  • therapeutic treatment/handling techniques
  • environmental modifications
  • prescription of adaptive equipment

Conditions addressed by Occupational Therapy include:

  • sensory processing
  • handwriting difficulties
  • delays with fine and gross motor skills
  • acquired brain injuries
  • limited mobility
  • coordination difficulties
  • feeding concerns
  • self regulation challenges
  • anxiety

The goal of Occupational Therapy is to maximize a child’s level of independence and function in the areas of self-care (self-help skills), productivity (school) and/or leisure (play skills). Services include assessment, treatment, consultation and education.

The cost of occupational therapy services are often covered by extended health insurance benefit plans. Receipts for service are provided at the end of each session and qualify as a medical expense for income tax purposes.
